Most Common Skincare Questions
August 23, 2024
This week, we thought it would be interesting for us to share with you some of the most frequent questions we get and the answers we give.
What is the liquid foundation replacement that you recommend now that you discontinued your custom blended line?
Yep – this is the number one question we have received ever since our liquid foundation supplier stopped making the foundation base we used for over 30 years. And sadly, the answer is not that we have found a solid replacement. We looked and looked but there were no other foundation suppliers that had the ingredients we required.
After reading literally hundreds of ingredient lists, this one is the makeup that has the least chance of clogging your skin – https://dermablend.com/products/flawless-creator%E2%84%A2-lightweight-foundation?variant=44266578051379
If you would like us to take a look at the ingredient list of your favorite makeup, please go ahead and send it to clearskin@ninjaskincare.com and we will tell you our thoughts.
What is a good skincare routine for my teenager?
Is your child willing to wash their face in the AM and PM and after exercising/sweating (if more than 1 hour before either AM or PM routines)? That’s the hardest part of getting young people on board – the consistency of washing their faces. If they are willing to do that – then the facial cleanser that matches their skin type would be perfect. Typically, the Normal Facial Cleanser works well for starting out…unless they have sensitive/reactive skin and then start with the Balancing Cleanser.
If they are washing AM and PM then starting with the Salicylic Acid 1 would be ideal. It’s easy to use, invisible, won’t stain/fade sheets, and is a mild treatment. They would start using it in the PM after washing their face – then wash it off again in the AM. And…using sunscreen is imperative in the AM. We have spf 30 or 50….but our sunscreen is not waterproof and if they are sweating a lot then they should not use it on their forehead in case they sweat and it travels into their eyes…and stings! Best bet is to wear a wide-brimmed hat out in the sun also!
- AM – cleanser, sunscreen
- After sweating – cleanser
- PM – cleanser, Salicylic Acid
If their pimples are getting larger or are more red/inflamed, then they would benefit from the Abolishing Sulfur Mask and use it 4-7 x a week in the evening after washing and before the Salicylic Acid.
If their pimples are more than little blackheads at this point, then start off with the benzoyl – determining if 5% or 10% is better.
If they are inside all the time then they can use the MultiPlexion Moisturizer only.
Why is my menstrual cycle important for clear skin?
As you know, hormones affect the skin – so that’s why we ask about hormones and your cycle. The female hormone progesterone rises in the bloodstream for females at puberty and stays high until the late 30’s. That hormone makes the oil glands produce more waxy oil and causes more pimples to form – primarily on the lower half of the face. As a teenager, smaller breakouts are being aggravated by hormones during puberty. This is normal and the good news is that our treatment will be successful at fighting back those breakouts, as long as you are consistent with our skincare treatment.
If my existing routine ceases to be as effective as it used to be, how can I get more aggressive?
If you want to do more to zap pimples, wash your face in the late afternoon/early evening and apply just the 10% BPO medication. Keep the same AM and PM routines – so that gives you twice a day with Salicylic Acid and the Benzoyl Peroxide/Sulfur Medication. You can use mineral foundation over it if you’re going out. Just remember you have it on so that you don’t rub your face against clothing and bleach it! This will help make the treatment stronger.
Our favorite age old question that comes in literally every week – do chocolate make me break out?
Don’t worry about chocolate making acne worse – it’s a myth and a lie. A good diet is needed though – and chocolate ice cream isn’t the most healthy – but certainly not going to cause acne if you are eating well tooHow can I firm up the skin around my neck?
Sadly, nothing firms the skin that we apply topically. That’s a bunch of marketing hype that is just not true. The best way to keep your skin youthful is to keep out of the sun and to hope for good genetics!
What would be a good product to incorporate to start preventing lines and wrinkles?
Both the Trio and the Vitamin C are great products. If your skin is prone to blackheads, go for the Vitamin C because the
Trio has beta glucan, and sometimes beta glucan will cause small blackheads for blackhead prone skin.
Is it ok for me to pop pimples?
It is super tempting to squeeze those larger pimples, but if they are not ready to come out to the surface, you are actually pushing the infection deeper into your skin. This results in larger pimples, longer healing time, and of course a mark on your skin. it is much better to cover them with your abolishing sulfur mask because that will dry them up faster and it kills bacteria. Also, by covering them up, you are less likely to pick them!
Can you review what my daytime/nighttime routine(s) should be?
Morning:
- Facial cleanser of your choice and then apply Salicylic Acid (1,2,3)
- Sunscreen application (if out in the sun at all – or the Multi Plexion Moisturizer if inside – and apply the moisturizer only to the dry areas that need it)
Nighttime:
- Facial cleanser
- Apply the abolishing sulfur mask for 10 or 15 minutes – keep it wet to keep it active on your skin, rinse off with water.
- Ice with an ice cube directly on the skin for two or three minutes concentrating on the larger breakouts.
- Apply salicylic acid – let dry for a couple of minutes, and then apply the benzoyl peroxide or sulfur medication.
- After that is dry, apply more benzoyl on the larger pimples, let that dry and then dab mask on top of that for overnight. Whew!
Make sure you are applying the salicylic and benzoyl all over your face so you prevent new pimples from forming. Avoid your eye area as usual. And do not wear any moisturizer on your skin when you have benzoyl on at night.
