How to Maintain a Healthy Complexion During the School Year

You know how hard it is getting kids back to school after a long, leisurely summer of sleeping in and having really nothing on the schedule. They wake up when they want, eat whatever they want for breakfast and then spend the rest of the day moaning about how there’s nothing to do.

Oh… what’s that? That’s not your kid? Well, it is mine. 🙂

Then all of a sudden, I start the back to school countdown and a look of panic slowly creeps into their eyes. They start changing their tune about summertime boredom. They tell me how they are kids and school doesn’t let them have any time to just be kids.  They start repeating my mantra that boredom is GOOD for kids because it makes them more creative. And school allows no time for boredom.

I digress.

Then school begins and sure enough. There is NO TIME for boredom. In fact, there seems to be no time, according to my 12 year old, for anything, and that includes washing her face every morning.

EEK.

Therefore, for this week, I wanted to write a quick list of tips and tricks for you and your children to maintain a good skincare routine even with the insanity of schooltime schedule.

1/ Consistent Face Washing

Now this is a big one! Maybe the biggest. And as the mom of a tween, I know how hard it will be to do.  But if you can instill in your child that a twice a day wash is ultra important, it will help maintain a clear complexion for a long time. It doesn’t have to be a long-drawn out process. A quick rinse, slap some soap on, rinse and then apply moisturizer or medication. Quick and easy. The key for getting your child to be consistent about their skin care routine, in my opinion, is to make sure the routine doesn’t have a lot of steps. Depending on how acne prone your child is, a good routine would be the following:

2/ Healthy living

This means something totally different for kids vs grown ups. For grown ups, this would include no smoking, drinking, limit caffeine etc.  For kids, living healthy revolves around 2 things: eating a balanced diet that is limited in sugars and fats and consistent exercise. (Adults should do that too!!!) Diet and exercise keep the blood pumping throughout your body, and especially to your body’s largest organ – the skin. Ignore your diet and slack on exercise and you will definitely see the results in your skin tone and complexion.

3/ Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Getting kids to put moisturizer on is like giving a cat a bath. But it is important. This can be a regular moisturizer or even better – sunscreen. Because those kids might feel like they are in the classroom all day long but they are exposed to the sun long enough at recess that some sun protection is imperative! Another really super easy way to make sure your kid’s skin stays moisturized? Drink tons of water! Make sure to send them to school with a big old water bottle and instructions to drink 2-3 of those bottles throughout the day. Need to give them some motivation to drink more? Tell them that the more they drink, they more they can excuse themselves to use the bathroom. Works like a charm!  The secret you don’t have to tell them is that the more they drink, the more toxins and impurities get flushed through their systems, leaving them with healthier and happier complexions!

4/ Makeup

If your daughter is anything like mine, she is starting to experiment with makeup. Our rule was after the 6th grade, she could wear lip gloss and mascara. And boy, does she take full advantage. She cakes on the mascara to the point that by the end of the day, it has leaked all over her eyes and she has the proverbial raccoon eyes.  As the daughter of a woman who does not wear makeup, I guess I have not taught her about proper application. That said, I have taught her about the proper REMOVAL of makeup, which is key when it comes to preventing breakouts.

Ideally, your child (and you!) would remove makeup the second you get home to give your skin some time to breathe and to prevent the makeup from clogging your pores, causing breakouts and aiding in the formation of wrinkles down the line. Once you thoroughly remove the makeup – do your normal skincare routine and don’t forget to apply some moisturizing eye cream around your eyes. BIG MUST: Do not EVER sleep in your makeup!!!

5/ Sleep

And talking about sleep – let’s review how important getting a full 8-10 hours (depending on your age) is for your skin. Sleep in the reparative, healing time for your body. It is when your body gets rid of the day’s stressors, regenerates collagen cells (fending off wrinkles!), increases blood flow, reduces puffiness around the eyes not to mention, creating more luscious locks. That’s right – when you are sleep deprived, you have less blood flow throughout your body and with less blood flow, your skin grows slower and becomes more brittle.

So there you have it. 5 easy tips and tricks to maintain a healthy and CLEAR complexion through the school year, even with hurried schedules and cranky teenagers!  Reach out if you have any questions or comments!
