What Acne Products are Safe During Pregnancy?

July 16, 2018

Which topical products can you use safely during pregnancy?

We get patients asking us all the time “I am planning on getting pregnant soon – can I continue to use your products?”

The short answer is YES – 95% of our products are considered safe to use throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding.

That said, we always recommend that you first check with your doctor to find out if they have certain topical medications they recommend you avoid during pregnancy and breast feeding. Doctors are all different as to what they will and will not advise their patients to use topically.

Some doctors prefer their patients stop using or reduce their use of salicylic acid. Salicylic Acid is derived from the salix family (willow) and is the basis of aspirin, a blood thinner. The concern is that trace amounts of salicylic acid will be absorbed through the mother’s skin into her body and subsequently into her developing fetus, causing birth defects. In general, we recommend talking to your doctor to find out their medical opinion on using a low percentage of salicylic acid on a small part (typically just the face) of the body.

Whereas there is some warning with salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide is considered safe for pregnant and breast feeding women, as is sulfur, sulfur-resorcinol and glycolic acid. These active ingredients are excellent at exfoliating the layers of trapped dead skin cells from the hair follicles where acne forms. Topical application of these ingredients do not show an increase in the rate of congenital fetal malformation. Which is great news for pregnant women who suffer with acne. They have options for topical medications that are proven to prevent new pimples from forming.
