Avoid Summertime Acne
Although this is not a blanket statement, the majority of acne sufferers will report an increase in breakouts during the summer.
Why is this and what can you do about it?
Why this mystical and frustrating phenomenon occurs is fairly simple really. When it is summer, it is hot. Boy is it hot right now!
And when your body gets hot, you sweat. Additionally, Your sebaceous glands start producing more sebum, which is an oily substance your body magically creates in order to hydrate and protect your skin. The production of sebum ramps up in the heat because it is your body’s natural way of protecting itself.
Unfortunately, what this also means is that with more sebum and sweat production, dirt and bacteria are more likely to get trapped in your hair follicles and lead to an increase in acne breakouts.
What can you do to avoid the summer time breakout blues?
- WASH YOUR FACE! We know you know this but in the summer, it is even more important than normal to be consistent with your skincare routine. Use your favorite Ninja Skincare face wash, using a sponge to lightly exfoliate, and rinse thoroughly. We recommend that you do this once in the morning when you wake up and at night before bed, to remove all the grime and bacteria that has built up during the day. If you workout in between these times, it is not a bad idea to do a quick wash/rinse then as well.
- MOISTURIZE! A lot of people get scared of using a moisturizer in the summer or when they are already feeling oily and breaking out. But to avoid your skin kicking sebum production into overdrive, you need to moisturize! The key is to use a moisturizer that does not clog your pores. And lucky for you all, we have a whole slew of options! In the summer, we highly recommend using a high SPF on your face during all daylight hours. Our Daily Defender SPF 30 or SPF 50 are both lightly moisturizing and will be enough moisturizer for most clients. If you have particularly dry skin, then you could consider using the Vitamin C gel underneath the SPF for another layer of moisture OR applying our Multi-Plexion Moisturizer under the SPF as well.
- EXFOLIATE! Using a Facial Cleansing Sponge for your daily washes is a great gentle way to exfoliate daily. But if you are feeling the need for a deeper and more profound exfoliation, consider using the Exfoliating Mask on a weekly basis. By exfoliating and sloughing off dead skin cells, you are ensuring those same dead skin cells don’t get trapped in your hair follicles and turn into the dreaded breakout.
- SHOWER! We kind of touched on this above but if you are working out and sweating (which, how can you avoid it in this heat???), it is a great idea to have a quick rinse off to get the sweat and bacteria off your entire body, not just your face. If you are prone to body acne breakouts, this shower is essential to avoid them.
This might all see basic but remember, as with everything else in life, consistency is KEY. Wash, exfoliate and moisturize every.single.day. Consistency in skincare routine, consistency in diet, in sleep, in water consumption – all of these keys we have given you are essential to maintain clear skin year round, but especially in the summer.
