Halloween Tricks For Good Looking Skin
October 31, 2024
Happy Halloween!
Possibly (bah humbug!) my least favorite holiday for a myriad of reasons but I am TRYING to get in the spirit. My saving grace is that my favorite holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) are right around the corner, so I can hopefully gently glide through today and finally get to put away the ghosts and goblins that have been littering my front yard and replace them with glorious trees and colored lights!
But in the spirit of ghoulish masks and lots of chocolate, I thought I would throw a couple of tricks at you to preserve your beautiful visage for today and heading into these next exciting months of festivities.
Makeup!
– It goes without saying that you need to remember to remove your makeup tonight and every night before you go to bed. When you leave makeup on, it will clog your pores and lead to acne breakouts. Additionally, it can lead to enlarged pores, dry skin and around the eyes, blocked oil glands, resulting in dry, itchy eyes. Even worse, there are long term effects to leaving your makeup on while you sleep. When you don’t wash your face thoroughly, you can expose your skin to free radicals, which can break down collagen and lead to enhanced fine lines and wrinkles – and we all know that is not what we want!
– When choosing your makeup, either for a night out on the town or for a clown face costume, make sure you choose your makeup brand wisely. For Halloween makeup in particular, you might want to consider cosmetic-grade beauty products, normally labeled “professional” or “theatre”. The products you find at the Spirit of Halloween might say they are hypo-allergenic but they most likely will still clog your pores and result in the dreaded acne breakout that we strive to prevent.
– Test your new products before the big night! We have so many clients with sensitive skin. When thinking about wearing a face full of heavy makeup, test it out a couple of nights before to make sure you don’t have a reaction to the ingredients. Speaking of ingredients, try to avoid anything with lots of heavy fragrances or alcohol that will dry out your skin.
Hydrate!
– Every Halloween night, and I mean every single one, I am thirsty. For a couple of reasons. 1/ I steal lots of candy from my kids bags as I meander through the streets and that chocolate makes me THIRSTY! 2/ I purposefully don’t drink that much because I know that bathrooms are not readily available unless I am willing to ask one of my neighbors to use theirs (which I have sadly had to do. Super embarrassing!). But this is not what I should be doing! I should be hydrating throughout the night and so should you! Remember, water and hydration is GOOD FOR YOU and your skin! Look back on the last couple of blog posts if you forget why!
Eat Chocolate!
Yep – you heard right. Eat that chocolate tonight. Eat it and enjoy it. And then… tomorrow put it away. Everything in moderation, including chocolate. Contrary to popular wive’s tales, chocolate does NOT cause acne breakouts. But like most things – eating too much chocolate and sugar can cause your skin to revolt and break out. Eating a well-balanced diet is not only essential for your organs to function properly but remember, your biggest organ is your skin. So have your sweets tonight and eat your broccoli tomorrow. Here is an oldie but goodie blog post on the subject.
Mask up!
When you get home from the endless evening of ringing doorbells and asking strangers for candy, change into your cozy jammies, wash your face and pop on your favorite face mask – either the Exfoliating Mask or the Sulfur Mask. Either one will do your face good and you will jump into bed feeling hydrated and refreshed and ready to face what November dishes you!
Last tip is from Pamela – watch out for ghosts! 🙂
