How do acne email consultations “work”?

March 28, 2017

An example of a recent acne email consultation

We get these emails all.the.time from potential clients, who are desperate for help with their acne. Not sure who to trust, what to trust… who to believe. Most people have “tried everything” and “nothing works”. If you are wondering what kind of “consultation” you will have via email – here is a short snippet of a recent acne email consultation so you can get an idea of how it would work! Oh, and Pamela gives some pretty interesting insight as to what ingredients to avoid in your makeup too!

—————————

Hello Pamela. Yes, I have tried seemingly everything out there to treat my acne.

Yep – have heard that a ton of times and that is where I was back in 1988 – so in 1989 I opened this company and it’s been ‘clear’ sailing since! So I know how frustrating it is to have tried a ton of things and have had little results.

I am now a mom of two young boys and I desperately want to have clearer (im not naive enough to think it will ever be clear) skin. It could be clear most of the time – why not? if you prevent new pimples from forming every day then you’re not going to have out of control breakouts. Of course some pimples will still slip by – nothing is a cure – but it will be clear most of the time if you do the treatment that your skin requires to prevent acne every day.

It is beyond embarrassing. I envision having cyatic acne for the rest of my life.  Nope! Does not have to be that way.
I struggle with which cleanser to order…the stronger one sounds appealing but I’ve found that when I use a strong cleanser (such as panoxyl 10) twice a day or end up with cracked, peeling, skin…but I still get acne, it just can’t break through the crust of dryness. I don’t recommend having a medicated cleanser (at least not just yet) – so going with either the Balancing Cleanser or the Extra Strength would be fine. Both are great and non medicated.  The balancing was recommended for you because you said you have combination skin.
I currently use Glo pressed base and their camouflage as my “foundation). They have put in a ton of oils in these products – not a fan – sorry. I’m way over the top picky with ingredients so we’d want you to switch from these.
I try to use as little as possible. That’s good! In the past I have also used Jane Iredale. Could any of this be causing trouble? Yes!!! Jane Iredale used to be awesome then they went and messed it up by putting in a bunch of oils. That’s why I like only the ORIGINAL formula of Bare Minerals loose powder foundation – it is the only OTC that will not clog the skin. Or ours Product
I also sleep with my hair away from my face and change my pillowcase frequently. Good habits to have…although if your hair is dry it’s not a problem. I hope you avoid fabric softeners on sheets/pillow cases/towels – too much oil deposited from them onto fabric.
I have an appt with yet another dermatologist now that I am no longer nursing my youngest. But I can’t get in until June…and by then I know my skin will be a mess, most likely scarred.
Yikes!! We could help you for sure – it’s up to you of course. By June your skin will look better – but NOT over the hump entirely. The process takes about 4 months – so you’ll be looking and feeling better by then – but not quite clear yet.
What is it in the mineral makeup up that is causing havoc for acne sufferers? Frustrating because the mineral makeup up trend has been marketed towards the most desperate of customers… Is it the bismuth? Talc? I’m so confused.
Both talc and bismuth are fine – those are minerals – it’s the other stuff they put in there – here’s Glo:
Mica, Octyldodecyl Sterol Stearate, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Zinc Stearate, Boron Nitride, Zinc Oxide (CI 77947), Nylon – 12, Phenoxyethanol, Tocopherol, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Retinyl Palmitate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Caprylyl Glycol, Isopentyldiol, Water (Aqua), MAY CONTAIN (+/-): Bismuth Oxychloride
I high lighted some of the sticky stuff.

Every product I use has “non comedogenic” on it. there are no laws regulating that label – so they label what they like and put in what they want  – sticky stuff! All of the oils that they need to preserve the product so that it has a crazy long shelf life – they have no idea how long products will sit on their shelves so they have to prepare for the worst!  The end result is a lot of oils and fillers that are actually end up causing acne.

I frequent several comedogenticity rating scales (it’s how I landed on hemp oil…rating of 0) to try and avoid making things worse. It’s impossible to put together a treatment program that has no clogging oils – you have to use a topical medication to remove the trapped dead skin cells in the hair follicles.

I am attaching some pictures for reference. Thank you for sending them  helps to SEE your skin. I still think the products I recommended in my first email would be appropriate for your skin type….as long as you have no allergies to benzoyl peroxide, you should be good. If you do have allergies then I’d recommend our Sulfur Formula instead.

I may be interested in powder too…I typically just use the glo pressed base and camouflage (only on red cysts). you can use our minerals or the original formula of bareminerals – or our liquid too – all safe

Thanks for your help. I really do appreciate your guidance

No problem! let me know if you have any more questions – Pamela
