Wildfire Smoke and Your Skin: Why You May Be Breaking Out

        August 7, 2026

This post is hitting particularly close to home for me right now – literally, close to home. As we go into what feels like the second month of being confined indoors due to extreme wildfire smoke, not only are we getting stir crazy and just crazy in general, it has also gotten me thinking about all the various effects this is having on our bodies, minds and of course, skin.

So without further ado – here is a little blog post on how wildfire smoke is affecting our skin, since we are, after all, a skincare company.:)

If you’ve noticed more breakouts, redness, or dry, irritated skin during wildfire season, you’re not imagining it. While most of us think about protecting our lungs from smoke, our skin is also exposed to the tiny particles and pollutants carried in the air.

Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter (PM2.5) that can settle on the skin throughout the day. These microscopic particles may contribute to inflammation, weaken the skin’s protective barrier, and clog pores—leading to congestion, acne flare-ups, sensitivity, and dullness. Research has also linked wildfire smoke exposure to increased eczema and psoriasis flares. (American Academy of Dermatology)

Signs Your Skin Is Reacting to Smoke

        • More frequent breakouts or clogged pores
        • Increased redness or irritation
        • Dry, tight, or itchy skin
        • Dull complexion
        • Worsening of eczema, rosacea, or other inflammatory skin conditions (American Academy of Dermatology)

How to Protect Your Skin During Smoky Days

The key is to focus on cleansing and supporting your skin barrier—not over-treating it.

Start by thoroughly cleansing your face each evening to remove smoke particles, sunscreen, and debris that have accumulated throughout the day. Follow with a hydrating serum and moisturizer to replenish moisture and strengthen your skin’s natural barrier.

This is also a great time to simplify your routine. If your skin feels extra sensitive, reduce the use of harsh exfoliants or strong active ingredients until air quality improves.

        Ninja Skincare Favorites

At Ninja Skincare, we recommend focusing on products that cleanse gently while restoring hydration:

Wildfire smoke may be temporary, but the effects on your skin don’t have to be. A consistent routine centered on gentle cleansing, hydration, and barrier repair can help keep your complexion healthier until the skies clear.
