How to maintain your skincare routine when camping

We always love receiving blog suggestions from our clients. (Hint! Hint!) Last week, a topic came in and it really piqued my interest. They asked for suggestions and help on how to maintain their skincare routine while camping this summer.

This is particularly relevant to me because over the last 10+ years, our family has become quite the campers. We’re talking 52 days of tent camping in 2021 (thanks Covid!) and in the other years, about 14-18 days of “car” camping (where you set up camp by your car) and about 3-6 days of backpacking into wilderness areas where it’s you, your backpack and bears. It is truly rejuvenating for the soul.

So when I saw this suggestion, I thought wow! THIS is something I can really write about!

But truth be told, I had never really thought much about it. I just packaged up my normal routine, which is 4 essential products used twice a day, and continued my normal routine throughout my camping trip.

Did I modify it at all?

Well, no, not really. Aside from putting the products in slightly smaller containers, using a bottle of water instead of a sink and not having a mirror to make sure I got all the suds off….it was essentially the same routine.

But that lead me to think perhaps…just maybe I am not normal. (An idea that my teenager would certainly agree with!) Maybe people put a lot of thought into this and either don’t have space for their normal products or think that their routine is too complex to maintain while roughing it.

So after reading tips online to make sure I didn’t miss anything and mulling it over, here is what I came up with:

– If your routine is complex, please contact us. Call us. Text us. Send a carrier pigeon. We are happy to simplify it for you so you’re able to maintain a rudimentary routine for the short time you’re gone without having to bring all your products.

– Some blogs and articles that I read gave some pretty dumb advice. At least dumb for people who are acne prone. I read stuff like wash your face with baby wipes. Uhhhh… no thanks. I know that seems like an easy solution but bad for 2 reasons. 1/ They weigh a lot and I can’t imagine you would be saving that much weight compared to just bringing small bottles of your usual, tried and true products. 2/ All baby wipes are not created equal and some will contain fragrances and oils that will exacerbate acne breakouts. If you are dead set on using baby wipes, send us the ingredient list and let us check it out.

– Of all the camping I have done, I have 100% been near water. Either water I had to clean to drink or even potable water. I can’t imagine camping without water. So that said, why can’t you just normally wash your face?

– Pamela chimed in that if you are really dead set against bringing your cleanser, you can bring round cotton pads in a Ziploc baggie soaked in witch hazel. Then you have a safe facial wipe when camping. But bring lots! They go quickly.

Camping is just glorious. To me, it is the pinnacle moment of summer. Yes, my back hurts for a couple of days after sleeping on the ground or a cot and yes, I am generally pretty tired when I get home and that first shower is glorious!

BUT I am rejuvenated, mind and soul. I have a deep connection with my family and friends who I camped with. And truly, although my clothes may be dirty, my body slightly achy – my face is never breaking out. I maintain 100% of my routine without a problem, even when backpacking and considering weight limits. You can do this!
